What is COS?

COS, which stands for Collection of Style, is a Swedish contemporary brand launched by H&M Group in 2007. COS pioneered the elevated H&M Group concept — premium materials, minimal design and better construction at prices between high street and luxury. The brand operates around 300 stores globally and is particularly popular with design-conscious consumers.

COS is known for its architectural, minimalist aesthetic. Clothes are designed to be worn across multiple seasons with little concern for trend, which aligns naturally with a quality-over-quantity approach to buying.

Quality — what are you actually buying?

COS offers good quality for its price tier. The brand uses better fabrics than most contemporary brands — natural fibres are common, construction is careful, and the minimalist design language means garments age well without looking dated. Tailored pieces and outerwear are particularly strong.

COS garments genuinely last. The combination of quality fabrics, careful construction and trend-resistant design means items can be worn for years. This makes the price premium over fast fashion more defensible on a cost-per-wear basis.

What fabrics does COS use?

CottonWoolLinenSilkLyocellViscosePolyester

COS uses a good proportion of natural fibres across the range. Cotton, wool and linen feature prominently. Semi-synthetic fibres like Lyocell and viscose appear in draped and fluid pieces where their properties suit the design. Polyester content is lower than most contemporary brands.

Where are COS’s clothes made?

European sourcing — COS sources from Portugal and Turkey for a meaningful proportion of its range, allowing closer oversight and shorter supply chains than fully Asia-based production.
Asia production — China and India contribute to volume production. H&M Group supplier standards apply across the supply chain.

Is COS ethical?

COS participates in H&M Group's sustainability programmes and benefits from the group's supplier auditing infrastructure. The brand uses certified materials including GOTS cotton and BCI cotton. Transparency reporting is above average for contemporary brands.

Like Arket, COS operates at a quality tier where supply chain standards are better than H&M's own-label, though the brand's ethical performance falls short of dedicated sustainable labels like Patagonia or Thought Clothing.

The verdict

COS is a reliable choice for quality basics and classic pieces designed to last multiple seasons. The minimalist aesthetic means items don't date quickly, which compounds the value of the better-than-average quality. Recommended for anyone building a considered wardrobe rather than a trend-led one.
